Prayer times follow the sun at your actual position, so they shift as you cross time zones and as the horizon drops at altitude, which means they are not your departure city's times. Why prayer times change in flight
Prayer times follow the sun where you are, not the clock on your phone. Flying east shortens your day and flying west lengthens it, so the gap between prayers changes as you travel. On top of that, at cruising altitude you can see a little further over the curve of the earth. That lowers the visible horizon, so the sun sets later and rises earlier than at sea level, by roughly ten to twenty minutes at typical cruise. Both effects move your Fajr, Sunrise, Maghrib and Isha.
Which prayers fall during your flight
A flight only crosses the prayers whose times land between takeoff and landing, which depends on your route, direction and departure time. A short daytime hop might only cross Asr, while a long overnight flight could cross Maghrib, Isha and Fajr. SkySalah brackets your journey: it shows the prayers on the ground before you leave, the ones that fall in the air, and the ones waiting at your destination, so you always know what to pray and when.
How the calculator works
- Position along the route. Your latitude and longitude are interpolated along the great-circle path from the departure and arrival times, and re-anchored to a live position fix when one is available.
- Calculation method and madhab. Choose from the standard methods (Muslim World League, ISNA, Umm al-Qura, Egyptian and more) and the Asr madhab; the times recompute to match.
- Altitude correction. Sunrise and Maghrib are shifted by the horizon dip at your altitude; Fajr and Isha are adjusted as a rougher estimate. You can turn this off in Settings.
- High-latitude rules. Near the poles in summer the sky may never fully darken, so Fajr and Isha are worked out by your chosen high-latitude rule rather than a true dawn or dusk.
Times are estimates
Every time SkySalah shows is an estimate from your route, schedule and calculation method, not an exact moment. Keep the actual departure and ETA updated, leave yourself a margin, and where you can, confirm against the sky outside your window. Fajr and Isha in the air are the least certain, because twilight at altitude has no clean formula, so treat dawn and dusk as the moments to double-check.

How are prayer times calculated on a plane?
The times are computed for the aircraft's actual position, not the city below or your departure airport. SkySalah interpolates your position along the great-circle route from the departure and arrival times, then calculates each prayer for that latitude, longitude and time using your chosen calculation method and madhab, with a correction for altitude.
